Interested in Joining?
Membership selection in the UGC is an individualized process that is different for each organization. Chapters choose the semester and dates when they will take new members. This process, known as intake, generally begins with an interest meeting followed by a period of membership education. The membership process culminates with initiation and may include a probate, or presentation show in which the organization's new members are revealed to the campus community.
Joining a chapter in the UGC is a lifelong commitment to a far-reaching national organization that is both exciting and rewarding. The brotherhood/sisterhood, dedication to community service and cultural uplift that you will share as a member of a UGC organization is unlike any other.
Interested in joining a UGC fraternity or sorority? Below are a few tips to get you started:
LEARN THE BASICS
Look for flyers, Facebook invitations and other publicity about programs and functions that will be hosted by the
chapters that you are interested in. Events are most frequently advertised on the Quad when the weather is nice.
Your attendance can not only show your interest in the organization, but also give you a better understanding
of their programs and make connections with the members.
Once you have identified the organization that you are interested in joining, do not be afraid to introduce yourself.
Choosing the organization that you would like to join is a serious decision, and one that can be greatly impacted
by your interactions and conversations with the member.
Chapters seek new members that have something positive to offer. Show that you have a genuine appreciation
and interest in the organization, have researched its history, exemplify its standards, have leadership and
community service experience, and can contribute to making the chapter stronger.
Attend an Informational
An organizations informational/interest meeting is where the criteria for membership are explained. Informational
meetings may be publicized via flyers or by a direct invitation from the chapter. To learn more about the values,
history and how to join specific organizations, please visit their chapter or national website.
Participate in Quad Day
Every Fall, UIUC Registered Student Organizations participate in an involvement fair for incoming students during what is
known as "Quad Day". Thousands of prospective students sign up to join organizations and learn more about what
Illinois has to offer in terms of engagement. Fraternities and Sororities all register to participate and set up
tables to tell interested students about their history, service, and how to join.
